Economy, Climate, & School

The major industry in the area is tourism.

Golf Country Clubs, lodges, ski resorts, restaurants and art galleries account for most of the incoming money. Winter brings skiers and snowboarders, fall brings leaf-watchers, and in the summer it's second home owners. The second largest industry is Christmas tree farming and nurseries. Cool air in the summer, moderate precipitation and soils are very favorable for that kind of business.

Banner Elk is one of the few places that you can experience all four seasons. Known for it's cool climate in the summer months, Banner Elk is a popular second home residence for many.  In the warmer months, Banner Elk receives cooler temperatures than can be found off the mountain, so many jump at the chance  to enjoy the wonderful weather.  In the winter months, Banner Elk becomes a winter wonderland with a fair amount of snowfall blanketing the area.  During this time, the ski season is in full swing and temperatures remain steady near or below freezing during the day.  Fall is a great season in Banner Elk, as the leaves are changing and the mountain sides are bursting with bright colors. .

Lees-McRae College, affiliated with the Presbyterian Church is a small, private college nestled in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina.  Founded in 1900, the purpose of the college is to fulfill it's motto, "In the mountains, of the mountains, and for the mountains," while extending its ministry of education and service to diverse populations.

Lees-McRae College is an engaged learning community where students are inspired to pursue excellence and make a difference in the world.  Lees-McRae College is a small, private 4-year college associated with the Presbyterian Church, and is one of the only American colleges to be named in honor of female professionals.

Banner Elk Elementary is a pre-K through fifth grade school with a student body of about 210 children. School has multi-age classrooms, which helps children work at their own individual skill level plus to relate to different age groups.  Banner Elk Elementary has a partnership with Lees-McRae College and Appalachian State University, which results in staff development and resources exchange.  There is also Grandfather Academy which is a charter school that serves grades 1-12.

Banner Elk NC Real Estate

Banner Elk NC Real Estate is very alluring among the different areas of the High Country.  Many aspects of this area in the Blue Ridge Mountains support the popular demand.  High peaks and rugged ridges surround the town. This mountainous area in many respects has stronger historic and cultural ties with the neighboring mountainous regions of Tennessee and Virginia than with all other regions of North Carolina. The area is beautiful during all seasons of the year.  Banner Elk has many gated communities which provide residents with security and peace of mind.
