Residents of West Jefferson enjoy a number of annual festivals, including the annual Independence Day weekend celebration -- Christmas in July, Coffee House Talent Night in June, Mistletoe Market in November and December that features special music, holiday traditions, and more, and a holiday parade in November that features wonderful local acts. Monthly, residents and visitors can also enjoy free mountain music concerts that are held in Backstreet Park. The population of West Jefferson as of July 2006 consisted of 1,131 residents. The town is served by one elementary/middle school (West Jefferson Elementary) and one high school (Ashe County High). With a student-teacher ratio of 12.4 to 1, the children are able to truly excel. For those interested in higher education, the Appalachian State University is located approximately 20 miles away in Boone, North Carolina, Wilkes Community College is only about 25 miles away in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, and East Tennessee State University is approximately 62 miles in Johnson City, Tennessee.
